Lego Military Base - Fort Huachuca, AZ. - Local Lego® fans showed off their best military-themed creations at Fort Huachuca's first Lego® Building Contest at the Murr Community Center this month, hosted by the Family & Morale, Welfare and Recreation Directorate. The twelve entries represent a variety of military life, including installations, combat aircraft and vehicles.
Contestants are divided into four different age groups: 4-6, 7-10, 11-17 and 18 and over. While most of the entries were from children, there was one adult. Each entrant must follow the rules of not using a kit to create their entry, and their Lego® creation must fit in a 24-by-24-inch box. FMWR consultant Amber Kinslow finds that Lego® is built with a detail orientation.

"[People] are amazed at how creative little kids are," Kinslow said. "That's the standards, they have to build it themselves, they can't help the adults."
Contest Depicts Military Life Through Interlocking Blocks
Contestants have about a month to present their work. Anyone can visit the Moore Community Center from July 15 through Sunday to view the models and judge the entries. On Monday, 158 votes were counted to determine the winner.
Philip Smith won "Buffalo Soldier Huachuca" in the category of 4-6 years old. Eric Cunningham took first place for USS Iowa, and Mateo Incorvaia UAV School took second place in the 7-10 age group. Jermaine Maisonette won the 11-17 category with Catching Bin Laden, and Sue Higgins won first place in the 18 and over category with Rhino IED Vehicle.
According to Kinslow, since this is the first competition, every contestant walks away with a prize, regardless of whether they win their age category or not. Every Lego® lover gets none other than Legos®, and Higgins, the adult champion, gets a Legos® mini-set and a gift card.
The event is the brainchild of FMWR Recreation Specialist Lourdes Hupin. They know that other installations host their own Lego® competitions.
