Lego Military Helmets - When we caught up with Teddy from here recently, we were both talking about LEGO S.H.I.E.L.D. The STRIKE unit - and how I chose the parts to put it and other custom LEGO army minifigures together. It was an insightful conversation – with Teddi explaining that he had never thought of bringing together many military-themed characters before, despite liking characters like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

I decided to continue breaking down some of the thoughts that go through my head when making custom military figures. I hope you can avoid this feeling with more confidence in experimenting when it comes to creating your characters. Without further ado, let's jump right into it.

When it comes to creating your own custom minifigures, choosing the right base minifigure you want to use is important in communicating the type of ideals you want. Many characters - like Special Forces and regular Soldiers - will use all kinds of armor and similar body gear, so your base figure choices can sometimes be feature defining. Some questions I often ask myself:

Thinking about the different types of minifigures we use can make the difference between us having a stocky guy in a dark blue suit and a S.W.A.T. In fact, this might be the most important aspect of any good custom LEGO army minifigure – so make sure you take your time and choose a base minifigure that you can actually build on. We mentioned thinking about your character's loadout - and it's even more important when looking at things like tactical vests and tactical belts. Depending on the character you make will depend on what type of vest and helmet you want your character to have. Say, for example, you're creating a Special Forces operator. You may want to choose a patterned vest that includes details specific to that character -

. Likewise, if we're going to make a mercenary, we might not want them to have heavy helmets and full tactical loadouts -

. Taking a moment to think about the additional elements we incorporate into these characters can make a real difference in how our characters look and how well they fit their overall appearance.

It's also important to note that when thinking about these loadouts, having a super detailed character isn't always the most beneficial thing. It's always worth thinking about how much detail a character needs. While a Navy SEAL may need a full loadout to reflect the tactical nature of their role, a US Marine may only need to have a tactical vest and helmet – because they don't need that much detail. Considering this can be good for two very specific reasons. First - it can allow us to consider the look we want to convey more, giving us more control over the overall look a minifigure has.

Second, it can be useful to add differentiation between other minifigures - meaning you can choose which minifigures you want to stand out the most. This can be great for making minifigures that really go against the grain to get the attention of other collectors.

When we talk about uniforms, it's very easy to think that - that everything should look the same. This can be great for some characters (military forces, police officers, etc.) - it's not always necessary. When it comes to creation, mercenaries are inspired by

, I decided to experiment and mismatch a lot of different pieces left over from the characters to see what I could do. This decision to mix and match created some of the best characters I have in my collection - forming a group of mercenaries I'm happy with.

Actually - LEGO is about creative expressionism, so we can make anything we want with our imaginations. This principle should also apply to the minifigures we make – sometimes changing elements or introducing new concepts can help us create results we never thought possible. I really recommend getting your hands on some of the unique printed accessories and elements out there - as they can really deliver great results, especially when complimented by official LEGO printed pieces.

Ultimately, this advice mostly applies to the elements I incorporate into my minifigures - but that's different for everyone. I know about me, I like hyper-realistic, hyper-detailed military characters. However, this may be something you don't like – so it's important to consider what you want to achieve from a particular project. Some of the best army minifigures I've seen use plain brown torsos combined with dark colored armor and helmets - still creating fantastic characters that accurately convey the ideas set out by their creators. achieve You don't need to buy highly detailed and expensive custom printed minifigures to make your minifigures look good. It's perfectly fine to work within the limitations you face when it comes to making your minifigures.

However, however - don't be afraid to ask other community members what they would recommend doing for your characters. Sometimes, we can spend so much time working on a project that we forget what we want to achieve – so other opinions can help. I know my friends' opinions have helped me make some big improvements to minifigures in the past.

I really recommend playing around and investing in a lot of different elements when creating your characters - because you can discover real gems. Without further ado - let's jump into today's episode where we'll take a look at the top 5 military themed hats available in the market today. Put on your chin strap and get ready, because it can explode!

When it comes to choosing parts for custom minifigures, I like to have parts that reflect real life counterparts - allowing me to get my minifigures as close to realistic as possible. The IBH is an example of a good helmet that does this, packing a lot of features that are subtle enough to create a helmet that looks great on a minifigure. Firstly, we have a fantastic night vision goggle mount - allowing us to attach either dual goggle systems like the Anvis 9, or quad goggles to the helmet. This is great - as a simple mount point gives you three unique options to make your minifigure look more tactical instantly.

You can choose not to put any glasses (as in the picture above), or you can choose to put glasses - giving you two options. You can lower them over the eyes of the minifigures - allowing you to create a night ops style soldier, or you can keep them above the eyes in their upright position - this is how the real life NVG when you are not in use. This dynamic functionality on a small scale is incredible – and it's something I personally love.

Now the IBH, in addition to the NVG mount, also has curved slots on the sides designed to represent where a person's ears would go.
